Nassau Community College Professor Joylette Samuels, and Coordinator of the Women's Studies Project at NCC, discusses her dissertation entitled Rememory: Memoir and Testimony of Women Human Rights Activists in the Global South. Professor Samuels arges that women who suffer under patriarchal rule trauma have lifelong effects. She incorporates the work of both Toni Morrison and James Baldwin to examine the Middle East Spring and women's roles in evolving governments throughout Libya, Egypt, Tunisia, and Syria. She focuses on the memoir and testimony of doctors Mamphela Ramphele and Nawal El Saadawi.
