Announcement: QLIUSN Group's First Book Fair

My Meetup group decided to host a low-cost (to authors) book fair since many book fairs, we discovered, overcharge for tables, making it nearly impossible for authors to make a profit.  Please share this information with as many authors are you know and, of course, please come out with family and friends as book lovers. Authors who want to be vendors should email me at Ayapressbooks@aol.com.  Tables start as low as $50. Peace, Marcia…

Who Really Killed Trayvon Martin?

I could go on and on about the murder of Trayvon Martin, but I want to watch the Trayvon Martin special that's coming on BET tonight. Yes, I could get my news from a variety of sources, but none of these sources is handling this story with the sensitivity it deserves.  For example, news personality (I can't call the man a journalist anymore since he has fallen very far from that tree) Geraldo Rivera was quoted as advising African-American parents not to allow their teenage sons to wear…

When Jingle Bells Become Jingle Sales! Resist Holiday Commercialism!

Who isn't sick of holiday commercialism? Christmas decorations go up before Thanksgiving, and who has time to be thankful when you're camping out in front of Walmart (or some other store) on Thanksgiving day! As opposed to jingle bells, we're hearing jingle sales, encouraging us to overspend while simultaneously being blamed for living beyond our means. If you're seeing red instead of sugar…

Stop the Execution of Troy Davis

Hi,

Troy Davis could be executed as soon as September 21, 2011 for a crime he did not commit. Davis is on death row in Georgia for the 1991 murder of Police Officer Mark MacPhail. However since his conviction, seven of the nine witnesses who testified against him have recanted and no physical evidence links Davis to the crime.  No one should be executed when there are so many doubts about guilt. It is more important than ever that we continue to let Georgia authorities know that we… Continue

Well, you can imagine how excited I am! Not only is Ida B. Wells one of my sheroes, but Michelle and I have the very same goals as writers! We'll be talking about how to write the wrongs by examining the role of African American female writers past and present.

Writer Michelle Duster, who compiled and edited Ida: In Her Own Words and Ida From Abroad,  shares insights about her great-grandmother's legacy as…

Don't Believe the Hype About Kelly Williams-Bolar

THE FOLLOWING IS AN EXCERPT FROM MY RESPONSE TO THE ATTACKS ON KELLY WILLIAMS-BOLAR ON DR.PHIL.COM. I HAD TO SET THESE RACISTS STRAIGHT! THUS, THE DIRECT ADDRESS "YOU" IS USED TO MEAN THE MANY MISGUIDED PEOPLE WHO ARE LIVING IN IGNORANCE OF THE REAL ISSUE.

It is very easy for those who reap the benefits of white privilege to condemn Kelly Williams-Bolar. However, to quote Harper Lee’s character Atticus Finch in To Kill A Mockingbird: "You never really understand a…

Fair Law, But Unfair Education: Black Mom Jailed for What????

MANY OF YOU HAVE BEEN ASKING ME TO WEIGH IN ON THIS ONE FOR QUITE SOME TIME, BUT FIRST, READ ABOUT THE DETAILS OF THE CASE IN "WOMAN GETS JAIL TIME IN SCHOOL RESIDENCY CASE" BY JEN STEER. WE NEED TO GATHER INFORMATION ON AN ISSUE BEFORE WE SPEAK ON IT. TOO OFTEN, WE ARE GUILTY OF LAZY THINKING I.E. NOT DOING RESEARCH AND BASING DECISIONS ON WHAT SOMEONE ELSE'S INTERPRETATION OF THE FACTS. PAY CAREFUL ATTENTION TO THE INFORMATION I PUT IN BOLD.…

ESSENCE HIRES WHITE FASHION EDITOR CONTROVERSY

A friend of mine brought this issue to my attention. Though I used to work at Essence, it was back in the eighties. I am no longer a subscriber for a number of reasons, but mainly because I have outgrown my women’s magazines phase, so this has nothing to do with Essence per say. Yes, many women’s magazines are at the forefront of bringing women’s issues to the masses, and I applaud them for that. However, they… Continue

Free the Scott Sisters Petition

Its time for Sistas and Brothas to set Mississipi on fire! I feel like I should be making this request at a civil rights rally during the sixties! Unfortunately, doesn't seem like things have changed much in Mississippi since then since they are still targeting African Americans.

As you know, the Scott sisters have been serving life sentences for stealing (allegedly) a measly eleven dollars! Check out the video on the homepage for more details. SOF gives them a shout-out in our… Continue

Death Threat, Be Not Proud

In high school, I read and studied a book called Death Be Not Proud by John Gunther. In the book, Gunther shares insights on what it means to live by, parodoxically, examining what it means to die.

One can suffer a worse death than the physical, I think.

Last week, several African American female professors at Nassau Community College received a written death threat. The death threat oozed with the… Continue

Carol Gilliam, Black Heritage Librarian, Roosevelt Public Library

Prof. Marcia McNair joined me at the Roosevelt Public Library for An African-American READ-IN on April 14th. This is an annual event held in February, but was re-scheduled because of a snow storm.

I opened the program with a few words I wrote. Marcia asked me to share:

"Nobody loves a genius child" Langston Hughes once lamented. In his day, brilliant Black people found themselves frustated by the barriers that stood between them and their destiny. Racism accounted for…

A Black People’s Initiative: Unabashed Redemption Song for Would-be Black Educators by Dr. R.A. Shabazz

“Don’t forget your history

Know your destiny

In the abundance of water

Only the fool is thirsty”

--Bob Marley “Rat Race”

For those who are adherents to African-centered perspectives on reality, and for those who, as Black people, attempt to live by African-centered cultural ideals, there is little confusion about the genocidal state that is debilitating the Black world, including the Black people of African ancestry living in America. Nor are adherents to… Continue

Message to Amanda Knox: Italian Food and Justice or The Black Guy Did Not Do It—You Did!

As I woke up this morning to images of a tearful Amanda Knox on The Early Show, my heart went out to her….initially. I’m prejudiced, in her favor, because she is a college student, and I am a college professor. She could have been any number of fresh-faced, intelligent young white girls I have taught over the years. Therefore, I felt sympathy for Knox and her distraught family. The Early Show report suggested a number of improprieties in the Italian system of justice, suggesting that if Knox… Continue
