THE FOLLOWING IS AN EXCERPT FROM MY RESPONSE TO THE ATTACKS ON KELLY WILLIAMS-BOLAR ON DR.PHIL.COM. I HAD TO SET THESE RACISTS STRAIGHT! THUS, THE DIRECT ADDRESS "YOU" IS USED TO MEAN THE MANY MISGUIDED PEOPLE WHO ARE LIVING IN IGNORANCE OF THE REAL ISSUE.
It is very easy for those who reap the benefits of white privilege to condemn Kelly Williams-Bolar. However, to quote Harper Lee’s character Atticus Finch in To Kill A Mockingbird: "You never really understand a… Continue

MANY OF YOU HAVE BEEN ASKING ME TO WEIGH IN ON THIS ONE FOR QUITE SOME TIME, BUT FIRST, READ ABOUT THE DETAILS OF THE CASE IN "WOMAN GETS JAIL TIME IN SCHOOL RESIDENCY CASE" BY JEN STEER. WE NEED TO GATHER INFORMATION ON AN ISSUE BEFORE WE SPEAK ON IT. TOO OFTEN, WE ARE GUILTY OF LAZY THINKING I.E. NOT DOING RESEARCH AND BASING DECISIONS ON WHAT SOMEONE ELSE'S INTERPRETATION OF THE FACTS. PAY CAREFUL ATTENTION TO THE INFORMATION I PUT IN BOLD.…

A friend of mine brought this issue to my attention. Though I used to work at Essence
, it was back in the eighties. I am no longer a subscriber for a number of reasons, but mainly because I have outgrown my women’s magazines phase, so this has nothing to do with Essence
per say. Yes, many women’s magazines are at the forefront of bringing women’s issues to the masses, and I applaud them for that. However, they… Continue

Brenda Farrar-Ejemai is the author of the book/documentary: The Family In The Car, A Revelation. In this on-time documentary she depicts a familly surviving on the streets of New York City who were once sheltered and somewhat privileged.
It describes a working class family struggling through the homeless shelters of New York City, including the boroughs of The Bronx, Manhattan and Brooklyn, all while working in Brooklyn.
That was over 17 years ago. Now New York City is planning… Continue

Its time for Sistas and Brothas to set Mississipi on fire! I feel like I should be making this request at a civil rights rally during the sixties! Unfortunately, doesn't seem like things have changed much in Mississippi since then since they are still targeting African Americans.
As you know, the Scott sisters have been serving life sentences for stealing (allegedly) a measly eleven dollars! Check out the video on the homepage for more details. SOF gives them a shout-out in our… Continue

In high school, I read and studied a book called Death Be Not Proud
by John Gunther. In the book, Gunther shares insights on what it means to live by, parodoxically, examining what it means to die.
One can suffer a worse death than the physical, I think.
Last week, several African American female professors at Nassau Community College received a written death threat. The death threat oozed with the… Continue

Prof. Marcia McNair joined me at the Roosevelt Public Library for An African-American READ-IN on April 14th. This is an annual event held in February, but was re-scheduled because of a snow storm.
I opened the program with a few words I wrote. Marcia asked me to share:
"Nobody loves a genius child" Langston Hughes once lamented. In his day, brilliant Black people found themselves frustated by the barriers that stood between them and their destiny. Racism accounted for… Continue

“Don’t forget your history

For those who are adherents to African-centered perspectives on reality, and for those who, as Black people, attempt to live by African-centered cultural ideals, there is little confusion about the genocidal state that is debilitating the Black world, including the Black people of African ancestry living in America. Nor are adherents to… Continue

This once taboo of a black man seeking and being seen with a white woman is no more. Not too long ago black men were beaten to death or lynched for this very act.
I don't know if it's due to the election of Barack Obama to the presidency, or everyone now sees racism in this country as dead and buried; but it seems to be a growing trend to see a "brotha" on the arms of a Caucasian woman these days.
Are they trying to say that a black man being seen with a white woman is an… Continue

As I woke up this morning to images of a tearful Amanda Knox on The Early Show, my heart went out to her….initially. I’m prejudiced, in her favor, because she is a college student, and I am a college professor. She could have been any number of fresh-faced, intelligent young white girls I have taught over the years. Therefore, I felt sympathy for Knox and her distraught family. The Early Show report suggested a number of improprieties in the Italian system of justice, suggesting that if Knox… Continue

It’s like reaching for something far away. If you keep on reaching and running without stopping, you will obtain what you are reaching for. Persevering, not quitting, but going after it with all your might, as though you have to have it; that’s the driving force. Don’t look at time
as a barrier. Look at it this way, the years are going to pass anyway, so why not accomplish what you wish.
The battle starts in your mind,… Continue
